What actually needs a plumber at 2am
A pipe that has burst and is actively spraying water, sewage backing up into a tub or floor drain, a water heater leaking near anything electrical, or a house with no water at all because the main line has failed are the calls that do not wait. On any of those, shut off what you can and call. We would rather come out and find it was worse in your head than have you sit up all night with the water still running.
A gas smell is its own category. Get everyone out of the house, call the gas company or 911 first, and call us after. That order matters and it is not us being cautious for the sake of it.
A slow drip under a sink, a toilet that keeps running, a water heater that is lukewarm instead of hot, or a drain that is slow but still draining are real problems, but they are Tuesday morning problems. Calling the office during the day gets you the same plumber and the same fix without asking anyone to leave their bed for it.

How the call goes, every time
You call and describe what the water, or the drain, or the heater is doing. We confirm the address and get a plumber moving. That part happens before we hang up.
The plumber gets there, looks at it, and tells you what is actually wrong in plain terms, not a diagnosis you have to take on faith. Then comes the price, in full, before a single fitting comes off the truck or the invoice starts running. Nothing gets touched until you have heard the number and said go.
Once the repair is made, it gets tested and verified working while the plumber is still standing in your house, not assumed fine and left for you to discover otherwise at midnight.
Chapter 03
What to shut off before we arrive
If a pipe has failed or you are not sure where the leak is coming from, find the main shutoff valve, usually where the water line enters the house or near the meter at the street, and turn it off. That alone stops most of the damage a burst pipe does while you wait.
If the water heater itself is the problem, and it runs on gas, turn its own gas valve to off. That is a separate step from the house's main water shutoff and it is the one people forget under pressure. Do either one and you have already done the part that matters most before we even pull up.
